Fact Checking 101

I always get a kick out of reading a science or technology news article written by someone who has absolutely no idea what they are talking about. It happens with surprisingly high frequency but much of the time only a person in the topic field can tell the person is blowing smoke out of his ass.

To digress a bit, I remember when I was teaching in a grade 3 class. We where doing a project on electricity and magnetism and I was looking through the teachers materials and handouts to find lesson ideas. I came across but a houndout showing the different effect of magnetism and what do I see at the bottom of the page but a picture of the moon with the caption "Magnetism keeps the moon in orbit around the earth." I think i actually had a seizure when i read this and the teacher didn't think anything of it. It's not the teachers lack of knowledge that supprised me. This is not knock against teachers, they are expected to be able to teach and be knowledgable on every subject under the sun but they can't know everything. When I was teaching history and English I certainly had to study up before i wrote my lessons that's why we have material and teaching aids. So the question we arrive at is how the hell was this crap published. Who decided that someone who obviously can't tell the difference between magnetism and gravity should be hired to write teaching science teaching manuals.

The article that got me thinking about this today was published in the EETimes which promotes itself as "Global news for the Creators of Technology." The report was about the workings of a 500 GHz processor which operated at 4.5 Kelvin. Upon seeing the use of the absolute temperature scale I was impressed but what came next made me and several of my lab mates laugh out loud.

"By comparison, 500 GHz is more than 250 times faster than today's cell phones, which typically operate at approximately 2 GHz, according to the organisations."

Now the same units are being used to describe two completely different things and i can understand how the average computer user might not know the difference. But, this is the author of an article in a tech journal that doesn't know the difference between the transmission frequency of a cell phone and processing speed. If this guy had any clue about computers what so ever he should realize there is sumthing fundamentally wrong with what he said. My AMD 64 only runs at 2.2 GHz and requires a massive heatsink/fan and draws a wopping 60 watts of power, I imagine it would be difficult to compress this into a cell phone. The modern cell phones run around 200 MHz, What he describes is the use of the 1.9GHz PCS band for radio transmission. If I knew it was that easy to get processing power from a transmitter/receiver I would have done it a long time ago. I think I'm going to go tune into the Fox so that i can get my radio grinding away at 93.3 million calculations a second, that should be enough to run Duke Nukem 3D =:>

Poor Bastard

Reliving the past can be fun and profitable. All over the Internet geeks are happily buying and selling their vintage Star Wars and Transformers action figures for ridiculous amounts of money. Just ask me or any other old time Nintendo player why you would buy the revolution (I will never call it Wii). The answer, because you will have access to every game Nintendo has ever made to download and play, for a fee of course. I have recently rediscovered the joy of holding a Nintendo controller in my hand thanks to my Geneva who has an almost mint condition Nintendo with Super Mario Brothers. I was surprised at how little time It too to re-accustom myself to the controls. I have that system so ingrained into my mind that it's almost an automatic reflex to jump the pole for 5000 points, (if you don't know what that means get out) even after all these years.

I check Craig's list every morning and I have found one poor unfortunate bastard who Is being forced to get rid of all his classic gaming systems. He seems to have everything including a Commodore 64 still in it's original box. Some of this stuff is priceless to the right people, anyone whose parents have sold away thier childhood for $5 in a Lawn Sale.

Here is the entry in the list with the link here.
I have a long list of video game systems and games I must sell no reasonable offers refused first come first serve.

Commodore 64 in the original box with cables and cover as well as monitor
note monitor is not in working condition

many Sega genesis systems and games including
several boxes in worn shape
sega activator in box
several games in boxes
sega 32x
sega cd
a few sega cd games
lots of controllers rf adaptors and power adaptors

nintendo's
super nintendo's
nintendo 64's
sega gamegear
nintendo gameboy's
sega master system
joysticks
atari
conic tvg-101
sega dreamcast
turbografx 16 in box
ther may be more frankly i've lost track of all the details

all of it has to go before the end of the week or my fiancee is going to kill me!
there are lots of games and accessories to many to list.

everything sold as is

It is going to take every fiber of self control in my being to stop myself from calling this guy. I was programming on my dad's commodore when is was still very young, can't remember how young but it was before grade 6 that i'm sure. As for the Nintendo stuff, ill just wait till the revolution comes out.

Night Market

Geneva and I went to the Richmond Night Market on Friday. For the benifit of my frinds back east, the Richmond Night market is a kind of huge Oriental Farmers/Flea market that runs on weekends at night. It was my first time there and I have to say I had a good time. There where tonns of stalls selling everything from thongs to practicle Katanas.

I picked up 3 Stephen Chow DVD,s for $20. For those of you who don't know, Stephen Chow is the Actor/Director of Shaolin Soccer and Kung Fu Hustle. I watched the King of Comedy with Geneva on saturday and it was very funny but to my dismay when we attempted to watch Fight back to School, there where no english subtitles to be found even though It said there where right on the box. I have not checked out the 3rd move i purched yet, called All for the Winner, but it is supposed to be the one that made him famous.

My second purchace was 25 blank HP DVD-R's for $10. I decided to stay away from the cheep DVD's that cost $5 for 50 as I was a little skeptical about their quality. They came in a Foil Package marked DVD-R on the side with no brand marking what so ever. With media i beleive it's important to pay more than $0.10 a unit. I also picked up a 80 DVD wallet for $8.

Unfortunatly we decided to eat before we got there as there looked to be a lot of realy tasty food. Geneva is particularly enmored by any food that comes on a stick and there was a lot of food on sticks there to eat. We did grab some Candy called Dragons Beard. It was like a realy thick cotton candy but not that sweet and with a crubaly penut filling. Although it was nice to try someting new I don't think I will be buying that again.

Well My gole for next time is to stare at the swords some more, Buy more DVD's, eat more food and possable get a $11 USB multi card reader.
