Pwning n00bs 4 1if3

Hmm very busy, very busy. Of course when im not busy im playing games not writing blog entries as i should be.

I have updated my Photogallary, just a small update but a good one. I was worried when i came out to BC that with all the health nuts and hippies I would not be able to find a good game of Warcraft. Oh how wrong I was. Where there are universities the geeks will congregate and I will find them. In fact the massive 8 player games I have had here have never been done by me before. Of course I have always lived in smaller cities with smaller geek populations to tap into. The last Lan party "The Return of Alex" Party had 10 people involved at it's height. Very impressive. Of course the Mac's presence limited the game selection but it was nice to have a lot of people for a change. Now If i can only get Duke Nukem 3D running again, the next lan party will rock.

I also realize I have never wrote about my new machine. I really researched a long time when I built my new machine. I got several buying guide magazines and Scoured sites like Toms Hardware Guide and The Firing Squad. I wont go into great detail about all my choices but here is the basic setup.
  • MSI K8N Neo4 Platnium SLI Motherboard
  • AMD Athalon 64 3500+
  • 2x512Mb Corsair Xpert Dual Channel Ram
  • Zalman CNPS7000B AlCu heatsink (w artic silver paste)
  • EVGA Nvidia 7800GT OC Videocard
  • Matxtor Dimondmax 10 300gb Hard drive
  • Thermaltake Lanfire Aluminum mid tower case
  • Razor Dimondback mouse (kick ass, seriously get one)
  • Viewsonic VX922 19" LCD monitor (brand new)
For a detailed explanation of my choices you can check out these 2 articles, they are a little out of date now but they give good descriptions on how to choose hardware and what is important. Just replace single with dual core now and it's still pretty up to date.

Building a $1000 Gaming Pc

The components I chose mimic a lot of what's in those articles but that is because eveyone at the time was recomending simmilar things. I chose everything based on upgrade ability. The difference between an Ok motherboard and the top of the line is really less than $100 in todays market. Get the best motherboard you can so you have upgrade options open in the future. I chose SLI because for the same reasons. In the future I can either get a new video card or get a second 7800 and double my current video power. This gives me more flexibility to the market trends. You can already see that the 7800 has been replaced by the 7900 so i should be able to pick up a cheep one soon. We can also see thatt AMD has halved the prices of their chips since i bought my computer and I got a fairly cheep chip at the time. I can now add a dual core for very little money and more than double my processing power. Another reason to go for the best motherboard you can. I built this in January and I think i will wait a year before I start upgrading it now.

The list of my fav games of all time is comeing, really it is.
